Our Children

Be Brave Bears is a charitable organisation run by volunteers who send personalised keepsake bears to children who are terminally ill or have life limiting conditions. Each of our bears is sponsored by businesses, groups or families, meaning these bears are free of charge to the children. Once complete each bear is placed in a special keepsake bag and given to the child complete with a numbered certificate. Once the child has received their bear the sponsor will receive a thank you photograph via e-mail of the completed bear and a sponsorship certificate with the name of the child who you have sponsored. Each bear is allocated a number and will appear on our Roll of Honour. If the child on this page has already been sponsored, but due to the timing of the previous sponsorship it has not yet been removed from this area, your sponsorship will be automatically allocated to the child next on the list (Priority order). This seldom happens but we must highlight that it can occur.

Bentley Mario Winters-Rawlins’s Medical condition...

Bentley has a heart condition called hypoplastic left heart syndrome where only half of his heart has developed and will need at least three open heart surgeries by the age of 4. So far we have been in Great Ormond Street hospital all his life... 6 weeks doesn’t sound a long time but for us and Bentley it’s felt like a life time. So far he has already had his Norwood surgery and 3 other operations to put in chest drains to drain excess blood that built up around his lungs which was putting pressure on his heart. The chest drain operation was done twice as the first time didn’t drain all the fluid... and the third operation was to look at his airways and voicebox as he was mute and couldn’t make a sound the only sound he had was a strider. Even after the procedure they still couldn’t find out why so got to have it done again in a few weeks after he’s recovered a little. We’ve been told between the Norwood and the Glenn surgery (he’s got to have at 6 months) is the most critical. His heart condition can never be fixed for it to be a normal heart and there’s a lot of things he will struggle with or not even be able to do growing up due to putting strain on his heart. The surgeries is never a cure only a temporary fix.

A bit about Bentley Mario Winters-Rawlins...

Bentley has won over so many hearts. The local news paper heard about his heart condition and they decided to do a story about Bentley without mine or his fathers knowlege raising awareness because it touched their hearts. He’s a little fighter... he’s had infections and fought them off. Hes already defined all odds and some things the doctors said he wouldn’t before surgery such as breathing on his own and having a steady heart rhythm. He loves lullaby’s and blowed bubbles from the moment he was born and loves west hams blowing bubbles lullaby so he’s already decided he’s a westham supporter despite me and his dad being Manchester united supporters. Bentley is always full of smiles and always determined to prove everyone wrong about him. I have never met a child that has so much fight like my little boy.
